If you want a strong and successful oral health, it’s best to keep oral cancer away from your smile.

Oral cancer in Roanoke, Virginia, is a destructive disease that can damage your oral health and result in your death, which is why oral cancer prevention is extremely important. If you need help keeping your teeth and gums free of this horrific disease, our Roanoke Dental Care team is happy to assist you. We recommend doing the following things:

-Refrain from using any tobacco product, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco. It’s also best if you only drink alcohol in moderation, if you do tend to drink. Binge drinking will not help you prevent the disease.

-Have a well-balanced diet.

-Limit your exposure to the sun. The UV rays tend to attack the lips and increase the chances of oral cancer. When you’re outside, please cover your skin and lips with sunblock.

Dr. David Jones and Dr. Priyanka Dutt and our team also recommend identifying the disease as early as possible if you do happen to fall victim to oral cancer. The sooner you catch it, the higher of a chance you’ll have at treating it. So, we also recommend doing these things on a regular basis:

-Conduct a self-exam at least once a month: Use a bright light and a mirror and look at every aspect of your mouth, including the lips, gums, cheeks, roof of the mouth, and tongue. You should also check the back of your throat and feel your neck for enlarged lymph nodes.

-Visit your dentist regularly: Sometimes oral cancer is difficult to detect on your own, which is why it’s important to visit your dentist regularly. When you come in for your dental cleanings, your dentist will perform an oral cancer screening and will thoroughly examine your entire oral cavity for any signs of cancer.
